Oost, West, Thuis Best

Literal English translation: East, West, Home Best
Meaning: One may have traveled all over the world and always had a good time, but nowhere will one find oneself better than coming home.

Helaas, pindakaas 

Literal English translation: Unfortunately, peanut butter.
Meaning: Too bad. When something goes wrong or you miss out on something, you can jokingly say 'helaas, pindakaas'.

Hij stond erbij voor Jan met de korte achternaam

Literal English translation: He stood there as Jan with the short last name. 
Meaning: He had no meaningful activity. 

Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een lelijk ding

Literal English translation: Even if a monkey wears a golden ring, it is and always be an ugly thing. 
Meaning: Who dresses beautifully does not become beautiful from the inside.

Alsof er een engeltje over je tong piest As if an angel is peeing over your tongue

Literal English translation: As if an angel pees over your tongue.
Meaning: Finding something very tasting. 

Kippenvel hebben

Literal English translation: Having chicken skin.
Meaning: Having goosebumps, being cold. In Dutch, 'goose' is replaced by 'chicken'.

Nu komt de aap uit de mouw

Literal English translation: Now, the monkey comes out of the sleeve.
Meaning: When suddenly it becomes clear how something is, or when someone's true intent or character is finally revealed.

Door de bomen het bos niet meer zien

Literal English translation: Not seeing the forest because of the trees.
Meaning: To be so involved in the details, that you miss the bigger picture. It's too much!

Een kind kan de was doen

Literal English translation: A child can do the laundry.
Meaning: It goes very easily.
