In the Netherlands, a housing permit (huisvestingsvergunning) states that you meet the conditions to be allowed to live in a rental house. For example, that you don’t earn too much and that your household is not too big.

You can apply for a housing permit at your municipality. In some municipalities, municipal approval is required for social rental housing, but sometimes it’s also required for mid-rental housing. Let’s break down the difference between social housing and mid-rental housing:

• Middenhuurwoningen
  Je huurt een middenhuurwoning wanneer je kale huur tussen €879,66 en €1157,96 per maand ligt (contracten gestart op en tussen 1 juli 2024 en 31 december 2024), of tussen €900,07 en €1184,83 per maand (contracten gestart op en vanaf 1 januari 2025). Het betreft ook een middenhuurwoning als de kale huur hoger is dan €1157,95 per maand (contracten gestart in 2024) of €1184,82 per maand (contracten gestart in 2025), maar de woning 143 tot 186 punten heeft volgens het (WWS) puntensysteem.
